Grief – The Curse Of An Eternal Soul

A poem by Tapiwa Chitembure

The Curse Of An Eternal Soul

Grief

The world froze in silence when our eyes met that somber day:
Frail in form, you made your way towards me, fueled by a bond of friendship:
As my mind drifted between a longing for sweet slumber and the gentle embrace of the morning Sun, your call for my undivided attention was inescapable!
The jagged edges of the morning chilled rock on which I sat came alive as I awakened to greet you, my dearest old friend:
Alas, the joy of seeing you would soon fade away when I recognized the distant conflict in your eyes:
Never had I seen the gravity of loyalty and friendship weigh heavy on you as it did that day:
Is this goodbye? Reluctantly I wondered! A few days later, time became my archrival when I found you laying lifeless in the field we used to roam:
In my epic battle with time, grief became my darkest curse:
For a moment, the void of your absence felt colder than winter’s breeze; until the pact we made in silence reminded me that I had agree to let you go:
Until then, I had never met an enemy whose power only grew stronger the harder I fought:
But my curse was no match for the light of your purest friendship, which kept me going:
Humbled, I realized that the error of my ways was trying to possess what time only loans a soul as the host of a transient world:
Weather time is a cold hearted host, or my demands of it are unreasonable, is a question of which I ponder when dark days overshadow the light:
But when the whispers from the void of you reignite my timeless feud with time, it’s the precious memories of you that come to my rescue, easing my darkest curse:
Until you find me again, as you did before, I shall bathe in the gift of joy that your life brought to mine:
As we part, I hope that my life did the same for you, my dearest old friend!
